Makati backyard farm

A brand new adventure: an urban kitchen garden.

Day 1

Today, Irvin from the Salcedo weekend market delivered the first batch of plants for my backyard urban farm. Bobby happily undertook his new (additional) post as head gardener. I am so thrilled about this new adventure! 

All I need now is a couple of cows and a few chickens... 🌿

2nd planting day

My cherry tomato plant has fainted and some of my salad leaves are shrinking.

I guess I had missed my cue to harvest and eat my salad... Not a good start.

But Irvin has come with replacements and new additions and my gardening spirit has revived. 

The soil is fragrant. Irvin thinks it's the "ipa" (palay husk) and the "kusot " (coconut wood shavings). I think it's just the smell of the earth: fresh, clean, life-giving.

Oh and almost forgot! At end of day, a sampling for dinner. It looks a bit of a mess now- I only remembered to take a picture towards the end- but it was, hands down, the best meal I've ever had! 🌿

Food for the senses

My undeveloped garden is mostly green except where there are a few precocious blooms and emergent veggies. But the differences in shape, hue, and texture create a subtle tapestry that is intriguing and beguiling.

Magnolia, gardenia, sampaguita, ylang ylang. Seductive blooms, sensual perfumes. 

The lemon tree in flower. The blossoms are fragile and delicately scented. A promise of fruits of a contrary nature.

The herbs are as varied in form and feel, in shape and size, as they are in smell and taste. Velvety or prickly, robust or languid, upstanding or drapey. The air swims in distinctive, delectable aromas suggestive of flavorful complements and contrasts. Bitter or sweet, subtle or explosive, insinuating or strident.

There is no doubt about it: this garden is destined for poetic musings and shamelessly flowery prose. 🌿

Farmland to tropical forest

I've decided my herb and vegetable garden was too much for me.

Our good friends Cecile and Levi came to oversee Levi’s project: the conversion of my urban kitchen garden. into a low-maintenance tropical rainforest.
